The Street Department is responsible for the repair and maintenance
of over 97 miles of city streets, all city alleys, traffic signs,
pavement markings, catch basins, storm sewers, detention ponds, and
culverts.
Snow removal is
probably the most visible responsibility. During a snowfall our
first priority is to keep hills, highways, bridges, downtown area
and main streets open, salted and sanded. Once the snow has topped
falling, plowing of all our streets takes up to 12 hours depending
on snow depth. Alleys are normally not plowed unless snowfalls
totals reach three inches. After all streets have been plowed the
City does haul snow from the downtown area. As time permits through
out the winter, snow is also removed from the boulevard on hills,
business locations around town and on dead end streets. As a
courtesy, if conditions and time permits, an attempt is also made to
haul snow from around church locations.
During snow removal
efforts, motorists are asked to slow down, watch for flashing lights
on vehicles, and keep a safe distance from all snow removal
equipment. Hazardous conditions may be reported to the Street
Department.
