House Numbers

With the weather finally getting nice a lot of do-it-yourselfers will be getting busy on their projects.  Many of these will include remodeling or exterior work on their residences. During the course of this work the house numbers are often removed from the home or business. It is extremely important to remember to place temporary numbers during the improvement phase and replace the permanent numbers on the structure at the completion of your project.

In an emergency, every second counts. Emergency responders are slowed when house numbers are not visible, or simply not present. Chippewa Falls ordinance 8.12(4) requires that all businesses and residences display their correct street number in a conspicuous place near the front entrance so it is plainly visible. These numbers must be no less than 4 inches tall and in a contrasting color from the house. A violation of this ordinance may result in a fine.

Although not required, it is very beneficial to emergency responders for those residences having alley access to their homes or garages to have the house numbers posted on the alley in case the emergency is in back of the property or in the garage.
