THE CHIPPEWA FALLS POLICE DEPARTMENT

CITIZENS ACADEMY

The first Citizens Academy was held in the fall of 1995. It consists of three-hour classes on seven consecutive Thursday evenings. Twelve citizen students are provided information and instruction on various police related topics. The participants learn what police officers do and the reasons for the techniques used.

The purpose of the Citizens academy is to remove barriers of misinformation and misunderstanding between the police department and the citizens we serve. Participants are given a look inside the department’s operation and have close personal contact with the department members who provide the instruction. This positive interaction is intended to improve police/community relations. Classes include lecture and considerable "hands on" activity for participants.

A variety of topics are covered during the Academy. Some topics included are:

  • Lines of Authority and Department Structure
  • The Dispatch Function
  • Firearms and the Use of Deadly Force
  • Handcuffing and High Risk Traffic Stops
  • Domestic Violence
  • OWI Enforcement
  • Criminal Investigations and Evidence Processing
  • Drug Enforcement

Citizens interested in attending the Citizens Academy can contact the Chief’s Office in the Chippewa Falls Police Department at 723-4424.
